You could say it’s a mini amount of mini content.

I want to like these, but every time I see the cute puppy dog exterior, I’m reminded that there is a BMW pit viper under there waiting to bite you(‘re wallet).

1st gen S and the newer (2014ish + ) arn’t too bad really.

My car is now 15 years old and has 200k miles on it. I’ve had to replace bushings, tie rods, a bearing, the radiator fan, radiator foam surround and the water pump in terms of maintenance. All that is just normal for the age of the car imo.

The only bad things are strut towers like to mushroom (one time fix is pretty easy tho), water pump needs to be changed every 70k miles and the coolant tank can crack. They can also leak from the oil pan gasket and the crack sensor O-ring, mine hasn’t so far. All of that isn’t terribly expensive to replace and is easily diy-ble.

Look at this if you do want a 1st gen S:

Some of them kind of use Peugeot engines , if that makes you more comfortable.

MINIs I have owned or currently own. All manual.

2008 Hardtop - still miss this one. Had Bluetooth/iPod (fairly novel in 2008) interface and cold weather package only, otherwise completely base. A few problems when new but problem free after warranty and when traded for the orange S at about 95k

2011 Clubman - I liked the barn doors and it worked well as a work vehicle. Probably the most troubled one of the lot but I still liked it. I traded it for the GTI when the transmission started getting really noisy.

2013 Hardtop-S - most reliable of the lot; again a few minor problems in warranty but now at 85k and the  only problem in last 40k was a coil pack recently.

I loved that you could open the right barn door with the remote, although you had to be a bit careful as the range is pretty good. One time I was working in a bad neighborhood and found it had been  standing open all afternoon. Nothing stolen though.

I did not know you could open a door with the remote. Neat!
